L'Etoile de Bon Pasteur Pomerol 2018
About the Wine Like most estates in Pomerol Le Bon Pasteur works with tiny allotments of land to produce its elixir. Bon Pasteur sits among some of the best company all of Bordeaux has to offer. Within a couple of minutes walk from the front door of the Chateau, one could find themselves in the vineyards of Petrus, Lafleur, Gazin, and Vieux Chateau Certan. L'Etoile is the second label of the estate, but this wine receives the same attention as the Grand Vin and proves why Pomerol is such a desired terroir. The Pomerol appellation encompasses a multitude of micro-terroirs. What makes Château Le Bon Pasteur, with a total surface area of 6.7 hectares, so unusual is that it is located on the border between two world-famous regions: Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. As opposed to the great châteaux of the Médoc, the vineyard is not in a single block but spread out over 21 plots. This patchwork of terroirs accounts for the wine’s considerable complexity, deep color, and delicate bouquet, as well as a softness typical of Pomerol and a generous, powerful side reminiscent of Saint-Emilion. The fate of Le Bon Pasteur is then closely connected to Michel Rolland who represents the spirit of the château for 40 years. Michel Rolland was born in 1947 on the edge of the Pomerol appellation. Steeped in nature, he spent his childhood and teenage years on the family property, Le Bon Pasteur in Pomerol-Maillet. Perhaps this explains his love for the land in general and in particular for the vine. Tasting Notes: 80% Merlot 20% Cabernet Franc. Clear ruby, the wine shows intense and subtle aromas with spicy and dark fruity notes. On the palate, the silky character dominates with soft tannins. This wine is fresh, round, and delicious. Reviews Blackberries, dark cherries, blueberries and bramble berries on the nose with licorice undertones. Vanilla and toasted notes, too. It’s full-bodied, structured and concentrated. It's going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and shine for two decades.

Rated 94 by James Suckling This has really nice tension with dried lemons with hints of apples and white peaches. It’s long and flavorful. A beauty. 81% sauvignon blanc and 19% semillon. Rated 92 by Decanter White flowers and grape aromas. Elegance and finesse with brightness. Good density of lemon here, this isn't so acidic but delivers a really well balanced wine with fruit expression, power and structure. I like the texture, smooth and well defined. Driving with a touch of spicy oak at the end. Have with oysters. Drinking Window 2023 - 2030. Rated 91 by Wine Advocate Composed of 70.9% Sauvignon Blanc and 29.1% Semillon, the 2019 La Réserve de Malartic Blanc was harvested from the 4th of September to the 16th of September. It is aging on the lees in French oak barrels for an anticipated 10-12 months. The nose is a little muted to begin, opening out with some coaxing to reveal subtle scents of fresh lemon juice, green apples, lemongrass and Bosc pears with touches of wet pebbles and allspice. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is soft on the acidity with ripe, sensuous, approachable fruit and a pleasantly peppery finish.

Good entry. Fresh and balanced in the mouth, with polished, silky tannins and a gentle, delicate finish. Very long aftertaste, with balsamic notes of coffee and toasted caramel, candied fruits and liquorice dominating these pleasant sensations. It is garnet in color with very enticing aromas of plums, dried herbs, earth, French Oak, and rose petals. Flavors mirror the aromatics in a wine that flows across the palate – lush, soft and juicy, with concentrated flavors of cherries and plums. Restrained tannins add structure and texture without heaviness. This reminds me of wines from the Rhone region of France. Very tasty & easy to love!
