During the Edo period (1603-1868) dried abalone, along with dried sea cucumber and shark fin, was one of the three marine exports from Japan that were especially prized in China. Iwate abalone is one of the world's three largest dried abalone. Also known as Yoshihama Abalone, the authentic place of origin is Yoshihama, Iwate Prefecture. Its shape is as high as ingots on the outside and low on the inside. There is an obvious line mark in the middle. The bottom is wide and flat. The abalone has thick flesh. The tail of the suction basin is sharp and the pillow bottom. It looks like a clear bead and has a dark brown color. Therefore, it is also called "golden abalone", with golden color as the top grade.
