    The Peach Blossom Festival
    Posted on: Mar 09

Each year in March and April, thousands of peach trees bloom in south China. The Peach Blossom Festival in Shanghai combines our love of the sweet almond and honey aroma of the blossoms and tart, fragrant peach flavored teas. People celebrate nature and the change of seasons from Spring’s lovely peach blossoms to Autumn’s healing chrysanthemum flowers.

Since 1991, Shanghai has held the Peach Blossom Festival in the large Nanhui District. While enjoying hundreds of peach trees in the area, you can listen to traditional Chinese music played by ethnic folk musicians and watch dancers and acrobats. You can also have picnics and view the fish ponds. During the festival, many local farmers and residents open their homes to visitors who enjoy playing with fish nets or farm animals and have a family meal together.

Wing Hop Fung loves all foods healthy and delicious, especially peaches and teas.

    Peach tree gum/Tao Jiao (16oz)

Tears of peach/Prunus persica/Peach gum is an Asian beauty secret guarded by generations of women who enjoy a lovely complexion.

Tao Jiao, the mild resin collected from Chinese peach trees, is rich in collagen, galactose, rhamnose, an anti-inflammatory, rejuvenating, skin-beautifying natural sugar, and amino acids. Collagen does far more than make our skin look youthful and taut. It’s a triple-helix protein that makes up a good deal of our body mass, in the form of tendons, bones, muscles and, yes, skin. Collagen is present in our corneas and the space between each vertebra. It’s a critical part of the human body, and peach resin is used in traditional Chinese medicine to replenish and preserve it.

Peach tree gum, a resin secreted from the bark of Rosaceae peach or mountain peach is harvested in summer. Rinse it and soak it in water overnight, wash away impurities, and dry it. [When soaked, it expands 8-10 times it size and the dried gum has a long shelf life.]

The taste is mildly sweet and its effects are neutral [not heating and is slightly cooling.]  Peach gum is used medicinally for diabetes, urinary tract infection, dysentery, and blood cleansing.

A Recipe: Papaya stewed peach gum

    Ingredients:

1 papaya, 10 grams (1/8 cup) of peach gum.

Peach gum is soaked in clean water for more than 12 hours until it becomes soft and the volume can increase more than 10 times. 10 grams of peach gum is enough for two meals.

    1. Wash the soft soaked peach gum carefully and break it into small pieces. 2. Add a little water to the peach gum and steam it for about 30 minutes.
    2. Cut the papaya in half and remove the seeds. (Papaya seed can be boiled separately to make a digestive tea.)
    3. Pour the steamed peach gum into the papaya. (Optional) sprinkle a little rock sugar, and continue steaming for about 20 minutes.

It is sweet, soft, juicy and soothing.
