There is some disagreement about who the original Valentine was. Valentinus—the Latin word for worthy, strong or powerful—was a popular name between the second and eighth centuries A.D., and several martyrs over the centuries had the name. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes Saint Valentine was an actual person who died around A.D. 270. Emperor Claudius II forbid men to marry because he wanted all men to be warriors not husbands. Valentine was a temple priest who was beheaded near Rome by the Emperor because he married Christian couples.
Another favorite story about Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for helping Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were tortured. According to legend, the imprisoned Valentine sent the first valentine greeting himself after he fell in love with his jailor’s daughter. Before his death, he wrote her a love letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression we use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, his appeal remains as a sympathetic, heroic and romantic figure. Valentine became one of the most popular saints in England and France. Today around the world we greet our Valentines with flowers, sweet treats and loving wishes for health and happiness.
