Shizhu Ginseng, also known as Shizhuzi Ginseng, is a geographical indication protected specialty from Kuandian, Liaoning, China, and is hailed as "the crown of garden-grown ginseng". This product is a "Selected Grade" premium ginseng, cultivated in the unique mountain climate and humus soil on the north bank of the Yalu River, simulating the natural growth environment of wild ginseng. It combines the quality of wild ginseng with the stability of garden-grown ginseng, making it a rare tonic in China.
Shizhu Ginseng has a growth cycle of 15-20 years, with no fertilizers or pesticides used throughout the process, fully simulating the ecological environment of wild ginseng. The long growth cycle allows the ginseng root to fully accumulate active ingredients such as ginsenosides and polysaccharides, resulting in a delicate, old-skinned, deeply textured root with long fibrous roots and pearl-like nodules. Its appearance and medicinal value are very close to wild ginseng, making it a top-grade ginseng.
The "25" on the package indicates a specification of 25 roots/600g (1 jin, traditional Chinese unit), meaning each ginseng root weighs an average of about 24g. The thicker and plumper the root, the more sufficient the nutrient accumulation, and the significantly higher the content of active ingredients compared to ordinary garden-grown ginseng. This is an important indicator of quality and grade.
The quality grades of Shizhu Ginseng are primarily classified by "Selected Grade", based on root shape, rhizome (lu tou), texture, and other dimensions. The common grade classification is as follows:
| Grade | Quality Features | Production Proportion |
|---|---|---|
| Selected Grade | Straight and complete root, long rhizome, delicate body, old and deeply textured skin, long fibrous roots with pearl-like nodules, no internal voids or whiteness, the top grade of Shizhu Ginseng | <1% |
| First Grade | Regular root shape, complete rhizome, clear texture, fibrous roots with pearl-like nodules, no obvious internal voids | Approx. 3% |
| Second Grade | Good root compactness, natural skin texture, complete fibrous roots, a small amount of internal voids or whiteness ≤ 1/3 | Approx. 10% |
