Sylvain Morey comes from one of Burgundy's most distinguished winemaking families, and has begun to carve out his own fame while developing his Domaine in Chassagne-Montrachet. His wines are noted for their terroir driven approach, combining careful vineyard management with low intervention winemaking that allow the character of each parcel to come through. His small holdings and meticulous farming make the wines particularly riveting for Burgundy lovers who are looking for precision and site expression without the scale of a large negociant.
The 2023 vintage was an excellent growing season for Burgundy which saw some rainfall early in the season and fairly moderate temperatures which allowed the grapes to ripen with an impeccable balance. Although temps did raise drastically around the September harvest, the better vineyards will have retained freshness, and coupled with the historic savoir-faire of Burgundian winemakers, riper generous wines that balance acidity and elegance so to keep from being too heavy. This vintage is noted for its particularly appealing combination of aromatic lift, clarity, and accessibility these wines have in their youth
Morey's En Caillerets come from an incredibly small parcel of only .34 hectares ( That is smaller than a American Football field!!) which has vines planted as far back as 1952, on south easterly facing argilo-calcareous slopes. Fruit is entirely hand-harvested and pressed as whole clusters, then fermented spontaneously in 350L barrels, followed by an oak regiment of only 20% new French oak for 18 months. This results in a Chassagne which is incredibly focused, opening with with aromas of white peach, baked pears, lemon blossom, and the list could go on. On the palate, this wine in elegantly textured and energetic, balancing ripe orchard fruits with a pronounce chalky and saline minerality. The finish is long and full of promising tension which promise an intresting evolution over the next decade.
