Korean Red Ginseng is a world-renowned precious tonic ginseng with a long history of cultivation and processing technology inheritance. Cultivated with the suitable soil and climate in South Korea, it has excellent quality and rich nutrition, and is a well-recognized classic tonic product.
The 6-year growth period is the benchmark for high-quality Korean Red Ginseng: over 6 years, the ginseng root fully accumulates active ingredients such as ginsenosides, resulting in plump texture and stable efficacy. It is a recognized high-quality standard in the Korean Red Ginseng industry.
The number of ginseng roots per 600g (1 jin, the traditional Korean unit) package is the specification identifier of Korean Red Ginseng. The fewer the roots, the thicker each individual ginseng root is, with more sufficient nutrient accumulation over the growth period, and the content of active ingredients is usually higher. For example, 15 roots/600g ginseng is thicker than 30 roots/600g ginseng, and its price is relatively higher.
The quality grades of Korean Red Ginseng, from highest to lowest, are Heaven Grade, Earth Grade, Good Grade, Cut Ginseng, and Tail Ginseng. The common grade classification is as follows:
| Grade | Quality Features | Production Proportion |
|---|---|---|
| Heaven Grade | Straight and complete appearance, distinct proportion of head, body and tail, dense texture, low proportion of yellow skin, almost no internal voids or whiteness | <0.5% |
| Earth Grade | Dense internal texture, with a few small white spots or holes, proportion of internal voids or whiteness ≤ 1/4 | Approx. 2% |
| Good Grade | Good compactness of the ginseng root, rough and thin ginseng skin, proportion of internal voids or whiteness ≤ 1/3 | Approx. 14% |
| Cut Ginseng | Made by cutting the whole Korean Red Ginseng into sections and slices, no complete ginseng shape, moderate flesh compactness, a small amount of internal voids or whiteness, stable content of active ingredients, high cost performance | Approx. 30% |
