xRené Rostaing is a benchmark producer of Côte-Rôtie, most noted for his elegant traditionally crafted Syrah from some of the region's most prestigious vineyards. His family's Languedoc project applies those same principles of balance, and terroir focus to the sunnier south of France, while also focusing on producing a more approachable wine.
Le Vassal comes from limestone rich soils near Nimes, where Mediterranean warmth and the famous galets roulés of Châteaneuf-du-Pape encourage ripe fruits. The blend is typically Syrah driven, 70 % with the rest made up of equal parts Grenache and Mourvedre.
The nose is expressive with a variety of fruits, spice, and floral lift. A beautiful black cherry, and cassis leap out of the glass with some cracked pepper, roses and lavender. The structure is much softer here, moderate acidity with rounded soft tannins that slowly build on the palate with each sip. A satisfying southern red that brings a Rhône like character, a true vin de soif.
