  • Domaine Lafage Cuvee Nicolas Cotes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes Grenache 2019

Domaine Lafage Cuvee Nicolas Cotes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes Grenache 2019

95 points Jeb Dunnuck  All Grenache brought up in demi–muids and aged on lees for 8 months, the medium ruby/purple hued color of the 2019 Cuvée Nicolas is followed by a killer bouquet of kirsch liqueur, savory spices, cured meats, and peppery garrigue. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and gorgeously textured, it has wonderful richness with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It’s another insane value from this team.  (3/2021) K&L Notes Jean-Marc Lafage has knocked it out of the park once again with this high-quality, low-cost stunner of a wine. Domaine Lafage is housed in his facility just outside the city of Perpignan. One of the most advanced wineries in the region, Jean-Marc and his wife Elaine use a range of sites gathering some of the best fruit in the Roussillon. For over a decade they have crafted many of the "must buy" wines from the region. The Cuvée Nicolas is named for Jean-Marc and Eliane's son. It is sourced from 65-plus-year-old Grenache vines from two main soils, the red schist in the foothills of the Pyrenees and the black schist from the village of Maury. All grapes are hand harvested and then fermented in large tank. Aging is in a mix of concrete and large oak barrels. This Grenache has incredible purity reflecting the rich red and black fruit flavors that this warm wine growing region produces. Another tremendous buy from the Lafages. *Practicing Organic*

Clear, medium, yellow. Nose: Delicious tones of mature green fruit. Delicious mature yellow apple tones, lime and lemon citrus. Hint of white peach, papaya and green apples. Palate: Smooth, vibrant, minerality and so elegant. Such intense fruit quality. The nose joins the palate. Intense minerality tones, toasty barrel, but balanced. Complex and generous. Long finish. A delicious Blanchots grand cru. Laroche is big and comercial, but it is hard to med up Chablis grand cru. This is so elegant and good.

  • Domaine Leflaive Macon Verze Les Chenes 2020

Domaine Leflaive Macon Verze Les Chenes 2020

Winemaker Notes Located in Mâcon, two parcels of this vineyard were purchased by Domaine Leflaive in 2003. It is made up of vines as old as 85 years and grows on shallow calcareous clay, resulting in a slightly more complex, fuller-bodied bottling from Mâcon-Village. Hand harvested, sorted, and pressed in Mâcon, the wine is decanted overnight and then brought back to Puligny for both fermentation and aging at the Domaine. The wine ages 12 months in oak (20% new) then 6 months in stainless steel vat before bottling.

  • Domaine Moriers Beaujolais 2019

    Domaine Moriers Beaujolais 2019

Initially near terrible aromas of kidney and generally far from fresh tones. Really unpleasant start and takes some serious swirling to get rid off. After that some traditional volatile acidity appears and starts showing a fresher spectrum of aromas such as various red fruit and berries, sour cherry and earthy notes. Generally a darker style of Beujolais but still not having the complexity of the better Crus like Foillards Morgon etc. --Daniel L

  • Domaine Nicole Lamarche La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole, Cote de Nuits, 2018

Domaine Nicole Lamarche La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole, Cote de Nuits, 2018

Earth, crushed rose petals, black cherries and raspberries, plums and wood spice. Excellent delineation and balance but a little lacking in concentration and depth. Still, a very elegant and pedigreed Vosne. This wine really transported me to the two times I took an early morning stroll on the narrow dirt road that separated La Grand Rue and Romanee Conti. An extra half star for taking me there. A nice treat. --Burgnut

  • Domaine Rollin Aloxe-Corton Burgundy 2018

    Domaine Rollin Aloxe-Corton Burgundy 2018

Pernand Vergelesses is a go-to example of why we like to focus on Burgundy’s edges: quality, price and availability. The terroir couldn’t be better—for either red or white wine. It’s a small appellation that lies at the foot of the legendary hill of Corton. In fact, some of Corton Charlemagnes’ vineyards are in Pernand. Pernand also has great producers, like Domaine Rollin who have been bottling their own production since the ‘50s, and selling a good chunk of it to Neal Rosenthal since the early ‘80s. Rollin has always been particularly great for anyone interested in Burgundian terroir, as their light touch with oak really lets the soil signature shine, even at a young age.In spite of how good the wines are they remain somewhat under the radar, especially here in California. That might be because Pernand generally still lacks a bit of the caché of its neighbors, or perhaps because their style of precise, light touch wines of nuance and transparency wasn't quite what Chardonnay and Pinot drinkers had in mind in the Bay Area during the 90s and aughts. Whatever the reason, things are starting to change.Simon Rollin, who joined his father Remí at the domaine back in 2003, made a long awaited trip to SF a couple months ago and I was fortunate to attend a dinner with him and Jean-Marc Pillot. Judging by the packed dining room and the reception from the crowd I don't think Simon's wines will be flying under the radar much longer.Given climate change, Pernand’s exposition means slower maturations with gorgeous complexity and perfectly balanced acidity. As things continue to heat up in Burgundy the cooler sites in Pernand, Savigny and the like will be ever more appealing.

  • Domaine Santa Duc Les Quatre Terres Cotes du Rhone 2019

Domaine Santa Duc Les Quatre Terres Cotes du Rhone 2019

This wine incorporates grapes from the elite Cru appellations of Vacqueyras and Rasteau as well as Côtes-du-Rhône Villages sites in Roaix and Séguret. A piercing blackberry and bramble-scented blend of Grenache and Syrah sourced from limestone soils, it's an approachably fruity introduction to Santa Duc's majestic (and more expensive wines) but maintains a trademark vitality and finesse. Highlighting juicy cassis and plum flavors along with a zippy mineral finish, it's a delicately tannic red that should drink well through 2026. ---ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA
