Yixing teapots, invented during the Song Dynasty, were also commonly known as Zisha teapots. Today Zisha teapots and teacups are characterized by the use of purple sand clay. These Yixing purple clay teapots, teacups, and other stoneware feature a purple-red brown color. They are fired without a glaze and are used to steep specific types of Oolong teas. Because of the porous nature of the clay, the teaware is gradually tempered by using it for brewing one kind of tea.
