Tasting: Comments Pascal CHATONNET December 2018: L'Archange 2016 has an intense and deep colour. The first nose is characteristic of the expression of the great Merlot on clay soil with a simply perfect summer: blackberry liqueur, liquorice and black pepper rise together. The palate attacks with a powerful but extremely velvety tannin; it develops like a real liqueur, without heaviness but with a lot of freshness. The finish is powerful and very long. Vanilla and black fruit compote linger in the mouth on a particularly persistent spicy finish. A great wine, definitely made for laying down but already extremely fine; ARCHANGE 2016 is simply fantastic.

Winemaker Notes The ensuing wine is amazingly complex and classic Napa Valley. The aroma is cedar, cola, dark black fruit and just a kiss of oak. The palate is round, expansive, bright and complex with flavors of cocoa, coffee, fruit and herbs. The wine fills the mouth but isn’t dominated by any one element and finishing amazingly bright for Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the great joys of making Cabernet is blending the wine before bottling and this wine was so very fun to combine just the right amount of Cabernet Sauvignon with its power, Cabernet Franc for the beautiful wild aroma and flavor, a touch of Merlot for the dusty plum character, Malbec for violet notes and Petit Verdot for color and tannin. Winemaker Notes Saldo was created to feature the outstanding fruit sourced from Dry Creek, Lodi, and Amador, where Zinfandel has thrived for decades. Dark ruby color with bold aromas of black licorice, black pepper, cherry, and baking spice. The entry is rich, full, and scintillating. The palate is mouthwatering and smooth with a hint of chocolate. The finish is voluptuous with soft, velvety tannins. Blend: 85% Zinfandel; 15% Petite Sirah and Syrah Critical Acclaim Tasting Panel Rich and spicy nose; dense, earthy, and tangy. The Prisoner strikes again: yet another winner from this mysterious producer and its winemaker Chrissy Wittmann. Kevin PC Zinfandel seems better fresh to catch the vibrancy that is the dominant American style. Several producers have told me the same, drink when released don’t hold. Aromas are boysenberry, Blueberry and cedar. Flavors are blueberry, currant, blackberry and applewood smoke. Tasted twice with same notes.
