This is their new red. Different from the Voyage wine.  Legendary for the production of memorable red wines, South Australia was our inspiration for Transit. We began with finding high-caliber grapes - always the key to each of our wines. Next came transit over ocean waters, a practice now both common and efficient for fruits and vegetables. The chilled grapes arrived at Caymus, as if just harvested.  We use time-honored winemaking techniques to extract deep color and rich tannins during fermentation, while staying attuned to place of origin. One can smell a slight mint character, likely a derivative of native trees. A ripe style, along with the nuance of dried fruit, reflects Australia's warm, dry conditions. Aging was in French oak barrels, with bottling in April 2018. Instead of a vintage date, each bottle will be known by its transit - this first bottling is: Red Schooner Transit 1.

This is a big upgrade in finesse and clarity to such a popular, premium cabernet from Napa. It shows lots of blackberry, tar, cedar and oak-tree aromas that follow through to a full yet toned palate of fine, integrated tannins and a vivid finish. Owner David Duncan explained that the American oak they use in the wine for aging now comes 100% from their own barrel-making facilities, which tones down the vanilla character in the wine. Really impressive and delicious. It’s a joy to drink now, but can age.

The 2018 Altagracia Cabernet Sauvignon unfolds with a nose of intense black fruit, wild blueberries and fresh black currants with a whiff of dried violets and tobacco. The mouthfeel is ample but firm with mineral notes of volcanic rock, forest humus and hints of dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine shows great depth thanks to extended maceration, with a refined texture of tight-knit tannins supporting the energetic black and blue fruits. As the wine opens, layers of floral notes, peppercorn and cardamom add to the complexity. The long finish lingers with a touch of licorice. This is a very pure and elegant Altagracia. Deep purple-black in color, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Altagracia slowly grows on the nose, developing into profound scents of black currant cordial, baked plums and wild blueberries with suggestions of bouquet garni, black pepper, pencil lead and fertile loam plus a touch of beef drippings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is delicately played with beautiful definition and lots of red berry and earthy accents intertwined with the black fruits. 96 points Vinous The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is silky and elegant, with lovely aromatic presence and impeccable balance. Sweet tobacco, cedar, dried flowers and mint all give this mid-weight Cabernet lovely complexity and nuance. The 2018 has shut down since I tasted it last year, but that is not surprising given the style here. The latest red blend from winemaker Jenny Wagner is named for great-great grandfather Johannes Glos who arrived in Napa Valley in the 1800’s. and He soon earned the nickname “The Walking Fool” for his good-natured personality and easy grin as he walked down into the Valley from his homestead on Howell Mountain. This blend of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah is a silky red with an earthy bouquet of wood, cigar box and sweet spice. The palate is lively with juicy raspberry and tart cranberry over meaty, espresso notes. As usual, ripe Grenache fruit is highlighted in this bottling with fresh strawberry, cranberry, dark cherry, and a touch of milk chocolate aromatics. The mouth is filled with more strawberry, raspberry, and cherry flavors with a touch of vanilla on the finish. A cool vintage brought this Grenache some high acidity which carries the fruit flavors on the long finish. Combining great texture and structure, the 2019 should age beautifully for the next 10+ years.
