  • Villa Maria "Ngakirikiri" Cabernet Sauvignon Gimblett Gravels 2018

Villa Maria "Ngakirikiri" Cabernet Sauvignon Gimblett Gravels 2018

Winemaker Notes Upon pouring, the deep-ruby hued 2018 vintage gradually unfolds fragrant aromatics of cassis, violets and complex wood spices, with graphite, thyme and clove also emerging from the glass. Layers of concentrated flavours are revealed across a medium to full bodied frame, with ripe fruit and hints of black olive and cigar, all wrapped by fine-grained tannins and supportive oak, enhancing texture and richness from start to finish. This vintage will benefit and gain additional complexity from careful cellaring over the next 15+ years. Blend: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 2% Malbec Critical Acclaim WE95 Wine Enthusiast Villa Maria's top red, a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blend, is named for the Maori word for gravel, referring to its famed Gimblett Gravels soils. This is a wine made for the long haul although even now, with ample time open in bottle or decanter, reveals finesse and character. The fruit is dark and fleshy with a spine of leafy green herbs, violet, tomato stem and baking spice. The palate is satiny yet toned and elegant, with linear, taut tannins, and currently quite a lot of oak influence. A worthy addition to any red-lover's cellar. Drink 2025–2045.Cellar Selection RP94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2018 Ngakirikiri is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Malbec, all aged in 60% new French oak for 20 months. Despite the barrel regime, the concentrated fruit easily comes through, offering up pristine aromas of cassis and plum, later accented on the finish by hints of dark chocolate and vanilla bean. Richly concentrated and velvety in texture, with a long, plush finish, this medium to full-bodied wine should drink well for over a decade.

  • Chateau d'Yquem Sauterne 1986

    Chateau d'Yquem Sauterne 1986

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate  There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend. This is a fascinating effort. With greater evidence of botrytis than the colossal 1983, but less power and alcohol, the 1986 Yquem tastes reminiscent of the 1975, only more precocious, as well as more concentrated. Several highly respected Bordeaux negociants who are Yquem enthusiasts claim the 1986 Yquem is the greatest wine produced at the property since the legendary 1937. Its enthralling bouquet of pineapples, sauteed hazelnuts, vanillin, and ripe apricots is breathtaking. Compellingly concentrated, the breadth as well as depth of flavor seemingly know no limits. This full-bodied, powerful, yet impeccably balanced Yquem should provide memorable drinking for 40-55 more years. Like the 1983, this is another winemaking tour de force. (RP)  (1/1998) 96 points Vinous  Tasted several times, the 1986 Yquem is a sublime expression of the vintage. It was the opposite of the previous year as it saw widespread botrytis after 40mm of rain in late October followed by a sunny November. It comes armed with an effervescent bouquet with pure honey, almond, quince and saffron, that patisserie scent observed in previous bottles less present. The palate is very well balanced with perhaps even sharper acidic "bite" than the '1983, fanning out wonderfully towards its crystalline finish that has a citric edge. A point. Tasted at a private dinner in London. (NM)  (2/2022)

  • Chateau d'Yquem Sauterne 2017

    Chateau d'Yquem Sauterne 2017

98-99 James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com "The tannins and phenolic tension are very impressive to this. Dried-lemon undertones and burning botrytis. Full-to medium-bodied, linear and racy. Beautiful fruit and intensity. Such clarity. Extreme but wonderful style." 97-99 Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "There was no frost at d’Yquem in 2017, and botrytis was very regular and even this vintage. The nose opens with very pure notes of freshly sliced oranges, yuzu and lemon barley water with hints of white pepper, fresh ginger and lime cordial. The incredibly rich, unctuous sweetness (148 grams per liter of residual sugar) is beautifully marbled with bright, vivacious citrus fruit and spice flavors, while lifted by well-knit freshness, and it finishes with epic length and great depth." 95 Wine Spectator "White peach and lemon peel notes mingle out front in this slightly exotic and very seductive white. A flash of shortbread caresses the finish, allowing white ginger and yellow apple notes to glide in for added range and length. Everything ripples, with finely beaded acidity. Beautiful and distinctive. Drink now through 2028. — JM"

  • Gavalas Assyrtiko Santorini Greece 2021

    Gavalas Assyrtiko Santorini Greece 2021

Wine maker’s notes The harvest begins in the middle of August. The grapes are brought to the winery, having been carefully placed in crates and baskets, never completely filled so as to avoid any damage that might occur in transportation. Only 25% of the grape juice is extracted. It is then placed in stainless steel tanks where with a cold process it is separated from the lees. Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel vats at 18oC. The result is the most distinctive, dry white wine, characterized by a bright yellow-white colour. On the nose delicate aromas of fruit – pear, lemon and pineapple – are present. On the palate, the wine is smooth, rich, fruity and full-bodied. It has a balanced acidity and a long aftertaste. It is best served chilled at 8-10oC.  An ideal accompaniment to seafood, white meat and light cheese.

Very solid grip. Best from 2015 through 2025. 2,916 cases made James Sukling 91 pts Attractive pure dark fruit in the nose. Plums, vanilla and wild strawberries. Beautiful bright fruit on the palate. • Collet Esprit Couture Brut 2012

    Collet Esprit Couture Brut 2012

Notes from the Winemaker The hand-made prestige cuvée of Maison Collet is a sparkling interpretation of Haute Couture. A rare assemblage of 11 Premier and Grand Crus selected in 2012. 60% Chardonnay from Grands Crus villages like Avize, Chouilly and Cramant contributes to the freshness, the tonicity and the elegance of the Esprit Couture. Vinification and ageing of the Chardonnay in champenois oak barrels allowed their aromas of brioche to develop fully. 40% Pinot Noir brings structure, softness and tenderness to the wine through iconic Grands Crus such as Aÿ, Mailly- Champagne or Verzy. Reviews and Accolades 94 Points/Wine Enthusiast This is the prestige cuvée from this co-op producer. Coming in a attractive, Art Deco-style bottle, the wine plays its elegant part. A strong toast flavor doesn't detract from the ripe green-fruit tone and bright acidity, while the palate feels rich and smooth. Drink now.
