Checkerboard Kings Rows Red Napa Valley 2017 2017 Checkerboard Kings Row remains an expression of the Aurora Vineyard which is located in a small valley midway up Diamond Mountain on a large knoll at an elevation of 1,200 feet. The knoll projects off the mountainside, giving the vineyard full Southern exposure and open light from the East and West and protection from Napa Valley’s summer fog.  Six acres are planted in the knoll’s rich, volcanic soils that are riddled with basalt cobble and loamy clay.  The remaining six acres are planted in a deep gravely mix of white volcanic ash and chips of decomposed Rhyolite that were washed down from the steep, rocky crags of Diamond Mountain above. The 2017 blend of Checkerboard Kings Row is deliciously aromatic.  The nose is fresh, with hints of sweet and juicy fruits that are augmented by dark roast coffee.  On the palate, the fruits swirl together with baking spices, green olive, and graphite in a wine soft on tannins but long on finish.

Checkerboard Aurora Vineyard Red Napa Valley 2017 On approach, the palate of the 2017 Checkerboard Aurora Vineyard is full with notes of freshly brewed Italian espresso, roasted vanilla bean, toasted almonds, and blackberry compote.  This spice-forward wine continues with flavors of baked cherry pie and crushed, dried red pepper.  There’s ample fresh fruit surrounding the core, including dark cherry, black currant, and red plum which serve to lift the wine to a lingering finish with finely polished tannins.

Critical Acclaim Jeb Dunnuck Coming from 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in 60% new French oak, the 2018 Château Pape Clement from Bernard Magrez is a gorgeous wine that's performing even better from bottle than barrel, which is always a good sign. Deep ruby/purple, with stunning crème de cassis and blackberry fruits as well as kaleidoscope-like notes of graphite, scorched earth, smoke, violets, and spring flowers, it offers full-bodied richness yet stays light on its feet, graceful, and almost ethereal on the palate, with integrated acidity and building yet seamless tannin's. The Cabernet Sauvignon really sings at this point, and there's almost a Médoc-like regalness here. Reminding me of a slightly more elegant 2005 (it also has similarities to the 2016), it will benefit from 4-6 years in the cellar and keep for 30+ years.
