By Farr Sangreal by Farr Pinot Noir Geelong 2020

By Farr Sangreal by Farr Pinot Noir Geelong 2020

Winery Each year the same descriptive notes come to mind for this wine: seductive, perfumed, seamless balance and moreish. It is a site that wavers very little in more difficult vintages and excels in the great ones—this is the backbone of By Farr wines. The alluring characters of this vineyard, combined with red fruits, whole bunch, acidity and oak, have produced a beautifully interwoven expression of site and vintage. That’s what it’s all about.

Weingut Jager Steinfeder Gruner Veltline 2022

Weingut Jager Steinfeder Gruner Veltline 2022

Jager is a 5th generation estate located in the incredibly picturesque hamlet of Weissenkirsch in the southern Wachau. It is a tiny, five-hectare estate comprised of some of the best vineyard sites in this appellation, including Klaus and Achleiten. The trellised vineyards run steeply along the Wachau, following her contours and turning in the direction in which she runs. The wines are usually fermented in stainless steel, except in the rare vintages where he has enough to fill an old, large oak barrel. Besides the fact that these wines are hallmark examples of the terroir in which they grow, they are less expensive than their more famous neighbors who produce wine in the same vineyards. Our only complaint is that there is not enough wine!

  • By Farr Chardonnay by Farr Geelong 2021

By Farr Chardonnay by Farr Geelong 2021

Winemaker Notes The trademark characteristics of the wine produced on our site are understated power and length with a mineral finish. The wine has a great fruit expression that is well integrated with French oak. The soil characteristics have come through in the style of wine we have today. The palate is fine but firm, with great acidity, texture and length. This wine is rich in flavor, yet very refined.

  • Alkina Kin Grenache 2021

    Alkina Kin Grenache 2021

The fruit for the 2021 Kin Grenache was grown on young bush vines (planted 2016) in schist-based soils across two blocks in the vineyard. Approximately 60% whole bunches went into the ferment. It was then fermented and matured in the same vessel—concrete tulips. In the mouth, the wine is very fine, stalky and pure, with freshening almost pulverized tannins; they’re like a clap of chalk—they’re everywhere. They’re structuring and they’re shapely and chewy in an excellent way, and the fruit is bright but not sweet. This is elegant and thrilling. Gorgeous. It is polarizing due to its febrile, nervous nature—but stylistically modern and forward thinking. Terroir-based wine here. There are notes of delicate orange blossom, green raspberries, rhubarb acidity, strawberry top and green apples threaded through the palate." Robert Parker 92 Points

    Alkina Polygon 3 Grenache 2019

    Alkina Polygon 3 Grenache 2019

Part of the Alkina Polygon series, which are their pinnacle wines drawn from tiny blocks, this one from only 200 vines. This is a beautifully stylish example of modern Barossa Grenache where complexity and detail are prized over raw power. Bright mid cherry red in colour, it is beautifully fragrant and draws you in quickly with its haunting aromas of mixed spice and charcuterie with an earthy, mineral quality with pretty reds fruits coming along for the ride. The palate is then quite understated, but with great drive and energy, delivering dark, savoury fruits with firmish but balanced tannins helping to support a lingering finish. It has not quite all come together and really probably needs at least a couple of years in bottle to really start hitting its straps.

  • Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz 2017

    Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz 2017

Eden Valley Medium garnet with crimson hues. Intense and evocative aromas of briary black currant, blackberry, blueberry, Satsuma plum, with lifted notes of sage, bay leaf, crushed flowering herbs, black pepper, anise and hints of cedar. The palate is rich and complex with well-defined blackberry, mulberry, red plum and black currant fruit, layered with sage, black pepper and bay leaf, and carried by fine-grained, mature, velvety tannins for an almost endless finish. DAVE BROOKES, HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION “Bright, intense blackberry and blackcurrant fruits mesh with hints of Asian spice, tar, turned earth, rosehip, sage and high-cocoa dark chocolate. Displaying a beautiful, pure, dark fruit flow, it's a wonderfully complex wine with ripe long-grain tannins and sprightly mineral acid drive, finishing very long and graceful with a core of cassis and spice. Will cellar magnificently.”

  • Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2020

    Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2020

Winemaker Notes The 2020 Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz is a black ruby plum color. A magenta rim with black core. Benchmark Penfolds Shiraz. A generous kaleidoscope of warm-climate aromatics. Blackcurrant, black plum, ironstone, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, cola. Chocolate gateau, adorned with candied cherries. Earthy North African spices: ‘Ras El Hanout’ - paprika, cinnamon, pepper, cloves, and fennel. On the palate, always honest, warm, and approachable. Chocolate mud cake, cinnamon syrup, poached red cherries. Coconut shavings, milk chocolate... wait, a Bounty bar! Summer plum pudding with currants and crème anglaise. Bone marrow broth, Vietnamese Phò - layered complexity and texture. Turmeric, cinnamon, star anise clove. Cola with a suggestion of Chinotto bitterness. Sweet, layered fruit with earthy spices. Mouthcoating, chewy tannins. Cherry pip acidity. Critical Acclaim Wine Spectator Ripe and generous, but the aromatics take this to the next level, with notes of cardamom, paprika and dried rose petal, plus touches of candied violet and cocoa powder, to complement the core of fleshy blackberry, black cherry and cassis. The tannins are dense but velvety, and this finishes with warm chocolaty notes.

  • Tyrell Vat 9 Shiraz Hunter Valley 2018

Tyrell Vat 9 Shiraz Hunter Valley 2018

Lots of crushed berries with red earth, terra-cotta and hints of metal and blue fruit. Ferrous. Salt and white pepper. Some oyster shell, too. Full to medium body, bright fruit and lightly chewy yet polished tannins. Drink in 2022. COMMENTARY: If I polled a group of wine experts, most of them would not think that an Australian Shiraz could be elegant. The 2018 Tyrrell's Vat 9 is stylish, persistent, and beautiful. TASTING NOTES: This wine shows up with a racy grapiness from start to finish. Enjoy its liveliness with roast chicken and crisp romaine. (Tasted: December 2, 2020, San Francisco, CA)
