Product details Located along Conn Creek at the eastern edge of Rutherford, Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III is a beautiful ranch with acres of grapes placed under a conservation easement. This historic vineyard dates back to 1895 and is tied to legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff.  Beginning at 500 feet of elevation, the vineyard gently slopes to the south, offering optimum sun exposure for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, and complementing their meticulous farming. In the pre-World War II era our already gravelly block was supplemented with stones from the creek during a flood control project done by the Army Core of Engineers. Planted entirely to Clone 337 of Cabernet Sauvignon, suited for the well-draining Cortina soils where they sit, and each vine’s ‘Lyre’ training protects the fruit from Rutherford’s warm climate, allowing for maximum hang-time.

The fruit fills the palate up front and through the mid-palate, with a refreshing spine of acidity and great mineral texture. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated. This is a delicious wine out of the gate and will be worth holding onto and checking in on over the next 20 years.  (8/2022)

Winemaker Notes The year 2016 was a good one for grapes in the northern part of Sonoma County. Our cooler vineyard sites had the unique advantage of a long and moderate growing season. With this mellow, even weather, our fruit ripened gently. The result: deep flavors with complex, integrated tannins, and lively characteristics that make this vintage one of our best. Our vineyard blocks that compose the Red Blend are all clay soil type. This clay helps some of the early ripening varietals lengthen their growing season so the grapes achieve full phenolic ripeness while also keeping a freshness in the fruit characteristics. Crafted from Cabernet Franc vines planted on a volcanic outcropping in 1986, and adjacent Merlot planted in the same year in clay-loam, the “H Block” has always been regarded as Arietta’s signature wine, paying great respect to the wines we love from the Right Bank of Bordeaux.  The 2018 vintage is 56% Cabernet Franc and 44% Merlot, and would certainly stand with the best of the twenty-one previous vintages.  Effusively aromatic, the wine is packed with notes of red raspberry, nutmeg, cumin, licorice, and slow-toasted oak.  It is both energetic and rich, with the ripe fruit flavors flowing across the palate and pulling the complex spice notes with it.  Aged for twenty months in 100% new French oak barrels and bottled without fining or filtration, the wine is deep and delicious, with the structure and weight that will allow it to age for decades.

Produced entirely from fruit from the long-lived “I Block” on the Hudson ranch, the 2018 Arietta Merlot mirrors the character of the old vines that hold the fruit:  muscular, deep, and at the same time balanced. This variety thrives in these soils, and in the cooler climes of Carneros, where Hudson is located. Fermented with native yeasts, macerated on the skins for nearly 30 days at relatively low temperature, the wine is alive with notes of black cherry, boysenberry, flint, and clove.  Bottled unfiltered after aging in 50% new French oak, its tannins have a cocoa powder texture, and the intensity of the fruit lingers on the finish for nearly a minute.
