This next Thursday, we welcome Lara Mancini Bond, Bordeaux Specialist, to the W Bar where she will pour some very special French wines, three produced by the great Rothschild family! The Rothschild name has been associated with some of the best wines in the world for more than 150 years. They are the ones behind the great, sought-after First Growths, Ch Lafite and Ch Mouton, each estate being controlled by a different branch of the family.
The Rothschild estates in Bordeaux continue to flourish, still producing the magical great First Growths. In recent decades, the family embraced opportunities to grow and develop, finding the best properties in other parts of France, California, and South America, often joining forces with the best grape growers and winemakers in those areas.
In 1998, the late Baroness Phillipine de de Rothschild, owner of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, acquired a very promising estate in the region of Limoux, in the Languedoc area of Southern France - Domaine de BaronArques . It took the family several years to renovate the vineyard and winemaking facilities according to their high standards worthy of Mouton and Lafite. Finally, in 2003, the Limoux wine governing body deemed the estate worthy of carrying the appellation of Limoux. An appellation, by the way, is the name of the region where the wine is made. To carry the name, the wine must follow certain grape-growing and wine-making rules and adhere to strict quality controls as defined by each region.
The estate mostly focuses on Bordeaux varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec as well as some Mediterranean varieties - Grenache and Syrah. The estates red wines are rich, full bodied and delicious. In addition, the estate makes a lovely white wine of 100% Chardonnay.
But the fun doesn't end there! Lara will also be pouring the second wine of
Léoville las Cases, one of the great Bordeaux Second Growths, from the St. Julien region. Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases shares the philosophy of its elder sibling; it is vinified and aged in order to preserve its fresh, ripe fruit flavor throughout its life. However, it is designed as a second wine, and is therefore made to be more accessible and for earlier drinking, with a significant proportion of Merlot in the blend.
