There are good reasons why Cabernet and Chardonnay have made their marks as "classic" California wine grapes! First and foremost, California weather especially in the Napa Valley, but in a few other areas as well, is ideal for Cabernet. The climate should be warm (but not too hot!) and sunny, to ripen the Cabernet slowly and develop its flavors. In Napa, what would otherwise be too-fast ripening is mitigated by the fog that rolls in every evening from the San Pablo Bay. This Thursday, we'll be pouring two wonderful small-production Napa Cabs. One from Galerie Winery where winemaker Laura Diaz Munoz combines grapes from diverse terroirs in Napa to create well-balanced, complex and elegant Cab. The other is from The Terraces. Only 435 cases of this wine, sourced from the famous Rutherford AVA, have been produced. This Cab is powerful and full-bodied. And both these Cabs are from the "textbook" 2012 vintage which had near-ideal conditions. You'll also get to try a Cab from the Central Coast region of York Mountain in Paso Robles. In Paso, the weather can get very warm which means that the wines are very ripe. However, the temperature drops sharply at night which allows the grapes to rest and develop good flavors. The Mighty Nimble Small Black Cabernet is winemaker Hilary Graves' project.
Chardonnay also performs well in warm climates tthat are cooler at night. Have you every tried a Chardonnay from Marin County before? Marin County is perfect for Chardonnay because it's so close to the ocean - again those mitigating sea breezes and fog that keep the grapes' acidity and elegance. The Skywalker Sommita Chardonnay, that you will sample, is unoaked and refreshing. Only about 40 cases produced! The Hollywood and Vine Cellars Chardonnay from Napa will be richer as it has been kept in oak barrels. Looking forward to seeing you this Thursday!
