Join us at the W Bar this Thursday, July 18th when we welcome the wines of the legendary, cult Central Coast winery Jonata and its sister winery, The Hilt. Funded by Stan Kroenke, who also is part owner of Napa cult winery, Screaming Eagle, Jonata which is Chumash for "tall oak" has been lauded by Robert Parker as "one of California's most exciting ...wineries."
Jonata's wines have been featured in the Robb Report's "Best of the Best," in Wine Spectator and Decanter.
These deserved accolades are thanks to Matt Dees, the brilliant winemaker behind the two labels. Trained in soil at the University of Vermont, Matt cut his wine-making teeth at Napa's Staglin and New Zealand's Craggy Range before settling down in the Santa Barbara area. His approach to wine making is somewhat unconventional; he focuses on vineyard and region expression, rather than single vineyard bottlings. He also brings a highly-sustainable sensibility to vineyard management. Using "polyface farming," introduced to the US by Michael Pollan in his famous "The Omnivore's Dilemma," Jonata has integrated livestock into its viticultural practices, essentially putting them on its payroll! Sheep cut the grass, cats and dogs are responsible for pest management and herding the goats, and chickens contributed needed nitrogen to the soil. There are no pesticides or herbicides used, and the estate also produces olive oil and honey. In other words, the animals are happy and so are the wines!
The Hilt, also lauded, specializes in Pinots and Chards from the Santa Rita Hills' AVA's harshest quadrant which lies close to the ocean. Dees' wine-making philosophy is similar to his one at Jonata. Create two different, unique expressions from one estate. You'll taste Old Guard Pinot which the winery describes as "wild, tense, and energetic." Compare with Vanguard Pinot and Chard which are "sultry, opulent, and fruit driven."
Wines poured will be available with special event pricing. Come early!
